Summary:

Oversees the daily activities of the Operations Training Division and supervises the Transit Instructors, core trainers and route service observers (RSOs). Ensures that operators have the training and coaching needed to safely operate both coaches and vans in support of the Fixed Route and Dial A Lift programs.

Distinguishing Characteristics:

As a supervisor, this position is responsible for overseeing Transit Instructors and ensuring an effective operator training program. This position must effectively coach, mentor and develop agency operators and all employees that operate the agency fleet.  As a supervisor, provide consistent support to Transit Instructors, core trainers and RSOs in the performance of their duties.

Essential Duties:

Performs as the subject matter expert (SME) of operator training and development activities and ensures that operators can effectively and safely operate coaches and vans in support of both Fixed Route and Dial A Lift route assignments.

Supervises staff to include: prioritizing and assigning work; ensuring employees follow policies and procedures; assists in making hiring, termination, and disciplinary decisions and recommendations. Trains, coaches, mentors, counsels, takes corrective action when necessary.

Leads day-to-day Transit Instructor activities, performing duties in support of the division. Serves as liaison for Transit Instructors to other departments and divisions.

Prioritizes, plans, schedules, implements, and delivers new-hire operator training, ongoing operator training, refresher training and post-accident training to include classroom and on the road instruction. Operates buses or vans when necessary. Effectively utilizes instructional materials and training aides.

Ensures compliance with contract provisions and FTA regulations. Reviews, interprets, and implements applicable state, federal and industry standards to include conferring with subject matter experts and licensing agencies/associations regarding compliance issues and regulations.

Tracks and monitors progress of probationary operators by reviewing ride all along evaluations and make follow up training recommendations. May directly conduct ride along evaluations and provide additional training and guidance as necessary. Reports the need for corrective action to the Fixed Route Manager. Prepares and maintains all related records.

Makes recommendations to the Fixed Route Manager and Dial-A-Lift (DAL) Manager regarding needed instruction to ensure that all operators are correctly and properly trained, equipped, and able to complete assigned duties in a safe, efficient, and timely manner.

Writes training policies and procedures; prepares narrative and statistical reports; makes presentations as needed or upon request.

Contributes to the goals and objectives of the Division, to include formulation and implementation of operational policies, procedures and controls to ensure safe and efficient operational activities and adherence to established service, budgetary and customer satisfaction standards. Recommends changes as warranted.

Licensing Requirements:

Class B Commercial Driver’s License with Passenger and Air Brake Endorsement.

Must submit to a criminal background check, the results of which must meet the hiring criteria for this role.

Physical Requirements:

Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, driving, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Training and Experience:

Associates Degree in a related field and four years of experience as a transit operator; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
