Your commute can be smooth and painless if you plan ahead. Some commuters want to drive, while others want to be passengers. Some have set work schedules, while others are flexible. Some want to share the ride five days a week, others, only occasionally. Here are some tips to help you ease into carpooling:
Meet your potential pooling partners in a public place before you actually start commuting together.
Discuss arrangements before you get on the road.
Choose a convenient morning pick-up point like a park and ride lot, or pick each person up at home.
Agree on a place and time to meet for the trip back home.
Determine who drives. You may want to alternate driving on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis.
Agree on the rules. Will you allow smoking? What about eating? How long will you wait for someone at a pick-up point?
Talk money. Decide how costs will be shared and when payments are due. If you share the driving equally, you don't have to exchange money. If one person drives, divide the costs. AAA publishes "Your Driving Costs" annually, with good information about costs per mile.
Discuss "commuter courtesies." Be on time. Don't make detours for personal errands. Be clear that your pool has a single purpose--commuting to and from work.
Make parking arrangements. Carpools often qualify for free, preferential or special parking rates.
Have a back-up plan. A prearranged emergency plan will lessen the inconvenience and confusion of a last-minute change of plans. A telephone tree can help you notify each other of absences or other changes.
Notify your insurance company. Many insurance companies offer discounts on vehicles that are not used every day for commuting.
Give your car a check-up. If you're using your personal vehicle for carpooling, keep your car well-maintained. You'll reduce the risk of a breakdown on the highway if your vehicle is regularly serviced.
Fuel up ahead of time.
Openly discuss pool-related problems before conflicts arise.
Buckle up, drive carefully and have a safe commute.
