The Intercity Transit Authority appointed Karen Messmer to their governing board, effective January 1, 2011. Messmer, a former Olympia City Councilmember, will serve a term through December 31, 2013, as Citizen Representative.
“It is important for transit to be integrated into community planning, so we maximize choices for everyone. A well-funded transit system is essential to offering the public active and healthy options,” stated Messmer.
Messmer is one of three citizen-at-large representatives appointed to the 9-member transit board, which oversees the governance of the public transportation system in Thurston County. Messmer served as a member of the Intercity Transit Authority in 2008 and 2009, as the representative for the City of Olympia when she was a councilmember. Messmer replaces citizen representative Tom Green, who served on the Intercity Transit Authority for 4 years, including 2 years as board chair.
“Access to safe, frequent, and reliable transit is also a key part of affordable housing. I am especially interested in making sure that a quality walking environment is in place to support transit use,” stated Messmer.
